** Late May There is too much going on to record right now, but here are some comparisons from last year and random notes There are loads of peas planeted this year (and beans) Last year we just had maybe 5-7 peas crambed into a small space This year we have peas scattered throughout the entire fence Most things are further along than they were last year. This is despite the unusually cold weather. I think this just means I'm finally getting a grip on starting seeds on time and getting them healthy and in the ground Lettuce is being picked on it's outer leaves We have loads of lettuce now and it's not even in full swing yet Every ~5 days I think we're getting a harvest It's much better that we have more lettuce spaced closer. Arugala is doing well, but it's got holes all over it from some insects The flavor is very strong now, not super good Maybe it will taste alright mixed in with something Definetly has a nutty flavor, but then a very strong bite comes in, not pleasant Potatoes are nice and healthy Brassicas are spaced further apart, seems to be working better Good strong growth so far Cucumbers and mellons are popping up nicely with the heat coming in finally I stressed for a while about those and dug a few up while they were germinating ** Early September Harvested potatoes a couple months ago, and they are storing very well in a box, and they taste great Just harvested a huge harvest or bottle gourds, at least 70 lbs, not really sure what to do with it all Second lettuce succession is nice and healthy, haven't been picking up much just because Arugala as well, same buggy issue, and sharp flavor. I'd like to experiment with different varieties Finn just sat in it though Got a great crop of cabbage, maybe planted a bit too close saved kale seed that bolted from last year Kale planted this year is looking great, planted to close as well We actually have some broccoli and cauliflower that we're getting, although some of it bolted too fast It also looks like of weird and non appitizing in general. I suppose I may need to baby it more Or put it in shade? Blackberries have stopped producing last month, we had a very good crop and they were delicious Learned that it was important to wait not just when the berries turned black, but when they fall off the vine They're quite tart even just when they turn black Raspberries were good this year too, not as many as blackberries though. Failed again at melons. I think it's an issue of fertility Butternut squash has not done well until recently when it has really popped off Got one large one, and a couple really small ones coming Carrots actually did really well this year I was surprised with the harvest. Lots of uniform fat, semi long carrots which stored well in the fridge and tasted good. Beets doing as well as ever, kind of just keeping them in the ground until they get big enough to harvest then pulling them Sometimes this takes quite a while with smaller ones Tried direct sowing turnips and radishes, neither did all that great Although I did get some small turnips Did a succession of beets, turnups and carrots They're coming along nicely, although some are doing much better than others. Not sure if it has to do with the sun, soil or both Soil is looking really nice in general. Loads of fertility everywhere Woodchips are disappearing in some areas pretty quickly now Worm castings are everywhere Was lucky enough to be able to harvest some pumpkins this year. I think I made a cross between the pie pumpkins and the big ones
